Ella`s speech 2015

Earthquakee!
Don't you guys know what to do ... it`s simple
Drop, Cover, Hold
Did you know about 120000 every year in the world die from earthquakes.

I’m going to tell you today what an earthquake is and what you can do in the event that you are caught in one.

Have you ever wondered what an earthquake is and what it does?
When there is an earthquake the tectonic plates move the earth. This shaking and moving is called an earthquake.
It sometimes makes big waves and it goes on the land.
When you're in a car and when you're moving as well as the earthquake you're most likely not going  to feel it.

Every earthquake has a centre where it is strongest. If the earthquake  is far out to sea it`s not going to be as strong as it is on land. Sometimes there are many small earthquakes before the big one. These small ones are called foreshocks. The big earthquake is called the  mainshock. Following this there may be many small quakes. These are called aftershocks. Aftershocks can follow an earthquake on and off for days or weeks.
An earthquake can last for just a few short seconds or go on for several long minute and many earthquakes happen on the ocean floors. Most earthquakes last a minute or less but can do a lot of damage in that time.

The main killers in a earthquakes are falling buildings, fires, landslides and the sea ground.
The deadliest known earthquake in history was in china in 1556. 830,000 lives were taken.
Each year there are about  millions of  earthquakes around the world ... in fact there is one every 30 seconds.
The largest recorded earthquake was in Chile in 1960. It measured a massive 9.5 on the richter scale.
But the earthquake most of us remember best is closer to home. It was in Christchurch in 2010. Many people’s lives were upset.

Because an earthquake can occur at any time and anywhere we all need to know what to do.

It’s a simple message ... stay safe
Drop, Cover , Hold (Do this)
Go under a door or table near you.
